Hand-crafted Wooden Boomerangs
Highland Fling Boomerangs owes its origin to Herb Smith, a talented ex-soldier who in the 1960’s started making boomerangs and in 1972 achieved the world record for the longest outward throw, 108 yds, for a boomerang which returned, leading to an appearance on “Blue Peter”.
Sadly, Herb died in 1995 and the business is now run by a Scottish forester, Richard Ogilvy, who continues to craft wooden boomerangs including replicas of Herb Smiths’ originals.

Meet Richard
As a forester Richard spent his career establishing forests in the Scottish Highlands, including a spell as president of the Institute of Chartered Foresters. He despairs that, despite any success he might have achieved, he is best known for the immediate sinking of the 42ft pre-war German yacht “Seawraith” when relaunched in Burghead harbour after being restored over many years in his back garden.
